L 0026: Comparative and Superlative

Grammar! Na lesson de hoje você aprenderá como usar corretamente as formas do comparative e do superlative em Inglês. Na L 0015 há uma extensa lista de adjectives, se você ainda não estudou, antes de estudar esta lesson aprenda os adjectives lá.

 

O comparative e o superlative  são bem simples.

Para adjectives curtos (de uma sílaba) você deverá adicionar ao final da palavra -er para formar o comparative e -est para formar o superlative. Veja:

tall = taller (comparative) / tallest (superlative)

short = shorter (comparative) / shortest (superlative)

old = older (comparative) / oldest (superlative)

 

Veja as orações abaixo:

John is older than Kate.

Jack is taller than Susan.

Mike is shorter than Peter, but Chris is the shortest.

 

Perceba que em orações quando você estiver comparando duas pessoas ou animais / objetos, você deverá acrescentar a palavra than (do que) depois do adjective no comparative e o artigo the antes da palavra quando for superlative. Veja mais exemplos:

• Mary is taller than Max.
• Mary is the tallest of all the students.
• Max is older than John.
• Of the three students, Max is the oldest.
• My hair is longer than your hair.
• Max's story is the longest story I've ever heard.

 

Observações: 

 

* quando o adjective terminar em -e, para o comparative basta acrescentar -r e para o superlative basta acrescentar -st = large / larger / largest

 

* quando o adjective terminar em consoante + vogal + consoante, a última consoante deve ser dobrada = big / bigger / biggest, thin / thinner / thinnest




Para adjectives longos (duas ou mais sílabas), o adjective não mudará, será apenas necessário usar more antes do adjective para o comparative e the most antes do adjective para formar o superlative. 

• This morning is more peaceful than yesterday morning.
• Max's house in the mountains is the most peaceful in the world.
• Max is more careful than Mike.
• Of all the taxi drivers, Jack is the most careful.
• Jill is more thoughtful than your sister.
• Mary is the most thoughtful person I've ever met. 

Observações:

* perceba que na forma comparative você deverá manter o than após o adjective se estiver comparando dois ou mais ítens (pessoas, animais ou objetos).

* adjectives terminados em consoante + y perdem o -y e então acrescenta-se -ier para o comparative e -iest para o superlative = happy / happier / happiest, angry / angrier / angriest

Alguns adjectives são irregulares e precisam ser memorizados. Veja:

 

good = better = the best

bad = worse = the worst

far = farther = the farthest

 

• Italian food is better than American food.
• My dog is the best dog in the world.
• My mother's cooking is worse than your mother's cooking.
• Of all the students in the class, Max is the worst.

Observações:

 

* alguns adjectives podem seguir mais de uma regra. Veja:

É muito comum o uso da repetição do comparative quando queremos dizer: Cada vez mais... Veja:

Tomas is getting fatter and fatter.

(Tomas está ficando cada vez mais gordo.)

This building is getting dirtier and dirtier.

(Este prédio está cada vez mais sujo.)

Jessica is taller and taller.

(Jessica está cada vez mais alta.)

The course is getting more and more difficult.

(O curso está ficando cada vez mais difícil.)
